If you’re searching for screen free activities for kids that don’t require loads of prep (and that you can actually take out and about), this is my simple go-to.
August is gorgeous… and also long. Whether you’re doing day trips, visiting family, or trying to keep everyone happy at home, having a small stash of travel activities for toddlers (and older siblings!) can be the difference between a lovely outing and a meltdown in a queue.
So here’s my “screen-free survival kit” : five reliable activity types you can pull out at home, easily pack for a UK staycation, or keep in the car for longer journeys.
The 5-part screen-free kit (easy to mix + match)
Something for role play
Role play is magic because kids lead it. A play kitchen, a shopping set, a little doctor kit or anything that lets them copy what they see grown-ups doing.

Something for open-ended
Building blocks, stacking toys or wooden cubes, all perfect for quiet time and brilliant for siblings of different ages.

Something creative (with a clear start + finish)
Sticker books, colouring, simple craft kits, water painting are all ideal when attention spans are short and you want a contained activity.

A “tiny book pile”
Not a whole shelf, just 3–5 books that feel fresh. Rotate them weekly and it genuinely keeps interest high.

A pocket of “on-the-go” bits
Think: a small pouch with a mini toy, a snack, wipes, and a little activity. This is the one that saves you at cafés, on trains, or when you’re waiting for food.

My favourite trick: the 20-minute reset
If the day is wobbling, set a timer for 20 minutes and say: “Let’s do one thing properly.” Choose one activity, sit nearby, and let them get absorbed. It’s amazing how often that’s all it takes to shift the mood.
