Starting School: Tips & Tricks for a Smooth Start to Year R (Don’t Worry, Summer’s Not Over Yet!)

I don’t want to break up the summer bliss, but just a little reminder that school will be starting in less than a month! If you’ve got a little one about to start Year R (Reception), you’re probably feeling a mix of excitement, nerves, and “how did they grow up so fast?”—and you’re definitely not alone.

Starting school is a big milestone for both children and parents, so we’ve put together some friendly tips and tricks to help everyone feel ready for the big day (and to keep those first-day jitters at bay):

1. Start the School Routine Early

Ease into the new routine by gradually shifting bedtime and morning wake-up times to match the school schedule. A calm, predictable routine helps everyone adjust and makes those early mornings a little less daunting (coffee helps, too!).

2. Practice Independence

Encourage your child to practice skills like putting on their coat, shoes, and backpack, opening lunchboxes, and using the toilet independently. Little boosts of confidence now will go a long way in the classroom!

3. Read School-Themed Books Together

Storytime is a great way to spark conversations about starting school. Books like “Starting School” or “All Are Welcome” can help your child know what to expect, ease worries, and even get excited. Browse our children’s books collection for lovely stories that celebrate new beginnings.

4. Visit the School (If You Can)

If possible, take a walk or drive by the school, or explore the playground together. Familiarising your child with the building and surroundings can help make the first day feel less overwhelming.

5. Label Everything (Seriously!)

From jumpers to water bottles, make sure everything is clearly labelled. It’s amazing how quickly things can go missing in a room full of eager four-year-olds!

6. Pack Comfort in Their Bag

A small comfort item—a favourite keyring, a family photo, or a little note—can make all the difference if your child feels wobbly during the day. (And don’t forget a treat for yourself, too—you’ve earned it!)

7. Talk About Feelings

Let your child know it’s okay to feel excited, nervous, or even a bit sad. Share your own first-day stories, and remind them that everyone (even grown-ups!) feels a bit wobbly with new things sometimes.

8. Celebrate the Milestone

Mark the occasion with a special breakfast, a “first day” photo, or a little treat after school. These simple rituals make the day feel special and memorable for everyone.
